Creating a Budget
Whether you are totally new to developing budgets or just need help navigating institutional approval, the Grants office has specialized team members and resources to help you create an accurate and realistic budget for your project.
Drafting a research or project budget
Our budget worksheet for Excel can be used as a guide for creating your budget. Keep in mind that fringe and facilities and administration (F&A) rates may vary based on the funder. Contact the Grants office team to discuss the details for your application.
Budget Narrative
Most funders request a narrative describing how you arrived at your budget figures. The Grants office has created a budget narrative template that can be adapted to suit your budget.
Buying things or updating facilities?
Contact the Office of Strategic Sourcing and Payments for prices on equipment, furniture, computers, special electrical wiring, or plumbing. In some cases, competing bids will be required.
Cost Sharing/Matching
If cost sharing is required, any commitments of matching funds must be approved in advance by your dean. The Grants office must receive a copy of this approval (e-mail is acceptable). Even if not required, institutional matching can be an indicator of university support and buy-in. Some agencies (such as NSF) prohibit cost sharing, so it is important to check specific agency requirements.
